Retro Grunge in Pixelmator
This Retro style poster is very simple to do, just using the pen tool, some textures and playing with text to make it look more retro.
Create a new document in Pixelmator, for size I’m using 800×1000 pixels.
Now you need to use Rectangular Shape Tool. First make a rectangular form shape, then transform it Edit > Transform… And it must look the same as below:
Do the same with the other shapes and results have to look like below, also you can merge all shapes (Layer > Merge Layers) then everything will be simpler. Colors should be like in picture below:
Now we are going to add a background texture to the shapes. Go to Layer > New Layer > Choose Picture… and choose Grunge Texture photo, then change Blending to Multiply.
Now we need to add the text to the document, I have added the text RETRO all in capital letters in white colour. I choose Skia font and the typeface Regular Bold. Set the fonts size to 200. When you have the text added to the centre of the document you should have something like this:
Now we are going to modify the text by making the letter T and the first letter R longer. First you need Retro layer convert into pixels (Layer > Convert into Pixels). Then take the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a selection the same as below:
Now pick the Move Tool and press ctrl + click, then choose Copy and Paste as a Layer and position the layer make as shown below. When these are done you will have the same as below:
Now you need to add some details and simply play around.
We are going to add a background to the text. First you need merge Details and Retro layers (Layer > Merge Layers), after that you need to make load selection (Edit > Load Selection), then go to Edit > Refine Selection… and for size I’m using 15 px. When you did this you should have something like in picture below:
When you have this selection create a new layer (Layer > New Layer) rename it to Retro Bottom and fill the selection with the dark colour, after that put Retro Bottom below Retro layer. Then go to Edit > Deselect All.
We are going to add texture to letters. Go to Layer > New Layer > Choose Picture… and choose Texture picture. Now we need to make a load selection to Retro layer, go to Edit > Load Selection, then pick Texture layer and go to Edit > Invert Selection and erase everything with Eraser Tool. When we are done you should have the something like in picture below:
